The The Leatherwood Loop is a gorgeous trail, but it is narrow and steep with lots of exposed roots and rocks. Parental note: If you have youngsters, this is a great park, but I don't recommend taking the trails unless you have a carrier and are sure-footed. When the road turns to gravel, you have arrived. Go about 6 miles until you see the brown National Forest sign that says "Fires Creek." The picnic area is an additional 2 miles down this road. The turn will be on the left by the Hills Store. The falls is directly across the river from the picnic. Follow this road till it splits, stay left to park at the picnic area. Travel a few miles to Fires Creek Wilderness Road on the left (road right before a bridge). Fires Creek Road is on the left after a lone gas station. Take 64 out of Murphy toward Hayesville for 9 miles. From Murphy, NC take Hwy 64 East which heads towards Hayesville, NC. Follow the directions, and you'll find it-don't let the lack of signs scare you off! Just when you think you should be getting there, you have another 4 miles to go. The covered bridge is gorgeous and there is lots of access to the water (if you have a trout stamp, definitely check this place out!).ĭislike: The drive is super intimidating because it is not well-marked. Liked: Well-kept park with ample parking and nice facilities.
